Algae are gaining traction as a sustainable, nutritious, and versatile food source – but how are consumers on board?
To help answer that, EU4Algae has launched a brand-new Consumer Infographic, combining insights from the 2024 Eurobarometer survey – which, for the first time, includes algae-specific questions across all 27 EU Member States – with results from the EU4Algae Survey and highlights from our May 2024 social media campaign.
The result? A colourful snapshot of how algae are perceived, consumed, and understood in Europe – and what’s still holding people back from embracing their full potential.
What’s Inside the Infographic?
- Key findings from the 2024 Eurobarometer survey, the first to explore algae consumption across the EU
- Insights from the EU4Algae Survey, showing key trends shaping consumer preferences
- A look at how Europeans eat algae – from sushi and salads to snacks, supplements, and algae-based gelatine
- Why algae matter: nutrient-packed, sustainable, and used in food, cosmetics, wellness, and more
- The top barriers to consumption – including lack of habit, recipe knowledge, or uncertainty about taste
- Levels of awareness of algae applications beyond the kitchen (think cosmetics, wellness, and more)
- A recap of the EU4Algae Social Media Consumer’s Campaign in May 2024, which reached thousands with fun facts, food tips, and interactive content
- And yes – a recipe to try at home and share with others!
Whether you’re new to algae or already a fan, this infographic is your go-to guide to understanding where consumers stand – and how EU4Algae is helping shape the future of food.
